Old Orchard Primary School
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Purpose of SWPBS

At Old Orchard Primary School we are committed to inspire, challenge and support our students to be the very best they can be in every endeavour. We instil our values of Respect for self, others and learning in our students and encourage them to be kind, responsible and to always be their best.

Development of SWPBS

Since 2018 we have been gradually implementing School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). When SWPBS is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

  • increased respectful and positive behaviour

  • increased time focused on instruction

  • improved social-emotional wellbeing

  • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff

  • increased adoption of evidence-based instructional practices

  • a predictable learning environment with improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance

Key features of SWPBS

  • Establish a common philosophy and purpose

  • Establish Leadership and school-wide support

  • Clearly define a set of expected behaviours

  • Establish procedures for teaching and practising expected behaviours

  • Implement a continuum of procedures to encourage expected behaviours

  • Use procedures for record-keeping, decision making and ongoing monitoring

  • Support staff to use effective classroom practices

What SWPBS Looks like at Old Orchard:

An introduction to SWPBS at Old Orchard can be found by watching this short video:

The following occurs at Old Orchard across the whole school to ensure that SWPBS is implemented:

  • Students are explicitly taught the school expected behaviours in different settings (A list of expected behaviours can be found in the behaviour matrix document below)

  • Staff demonstrate and model the expected behaviours

  • Staff acknowledge and reward students who show the expected behaviours with a dojo point for being kind, responsible or being their best.

  • Staff pre-correct (remind students of expected behaviours beforehand)

  • Staff re-teach expected behaviours if a student makes a mistake in a positively framed way

  • Classes are further acknowledged by getting to put a pear on the pear tree when they reach 100 class dojo points.

  • Dojo points and pears are traded in for tangible rewards such as a free dress day or a class game.

What can you do to help?

Everyone plays a role in SWPBS! You can help by demonstrating the school values and being an upstander in our community. By showing respect for self (be responsible), respect for others (be kind) and respect for learning (be your best) you can earn dojo’s and pears on the tree which go towards our whole school reward.
